Fun in the sun is not really fun without some ice cold refreshments to cool you down. With summer just around the corner, we are getting a head start on classic ice cold treats that we never fail to enjoy during the summer season. Pinoy favorites like the halo-halo, sago’t gulaman and fresh buko juice or shake are always at the top of this foodie’s list.
The halo-halo is a popular treat in the Philippines during the summer season. Those who live in the suburbs and rural areas are likely to find one of their neighbors selling this flavorful ice cold refreshment every summer. It is basically a hodgepodge of ingredients like sweetened banana, sweet potato, monggo and kidney beans, sago, gulaman, nata de coco, kaong, macapuno, langka, milk and others. These ingredients are piled on top of each other in a colorful layer then topped with shaved ice, leche flan, and ube halaya.
My mom used to make these treats for us when we were kids. Now, we simply buy them from restaurants then enjoy them while lounging around and listening to good music. There are plenty of halo-halo versions in the Philippines, Little Quiapo has generous helpings of homemade ingredients while Razon’s only has three ingredients and a leche flan topping in their halo-halo. But both are considered as among the best halo in town.
The beauty of having your own halo-halo at home is you get to choose the ingredients that you put in your own refreshment. These ice cold treats can be enjoyed the whole year through but we love them more during the summer season.
